Tooth-Colored Fillings

Benefits of Composite Fillings:

Tooth-colored fillings Zipfel dental

  • Composite filling material is made in different shades of white, to better match your natural teeth. This gives your teeth a better appearance than the silver-colored amalgam fillings.
  • Where amalgam fillings only serve to fill up the holes, composite materials are used with bonding techniques and thus become more nearly part of the teeth.
  • The placement of composite fillings generally requires less drilling than the placement of amalgam fillings, leaving more of the tooth intact.
  • Durability is an important aspect of tooth fillings, since we want the work to last as long as possible. Previously, composite materials were not as strong as they are today. These days, dental manufacturers produce lasting composite resin materials that can be used in all the teeth, including molars.

What is Amalgam?

The word amalgam means “an alloy of mercury with another metal or metals.” Another reason to consider the use of tooth-colored fillings is to avoid the mercury and other metals (such as silver, tin, and zinc) that make up amalgam. These metals may not be the safest substances to keep in your mouth all the time.

Filling Replacement:

Over time, some of your existing fillings may become worn, cracked, or chipped and in need of replacement. This can be an opportunity to replace any silver amalgam fillings with natural-looking composite fillings.
